The peer pressure was tremendous at school. Those kids who knew everything about football, who had memorised all the stats and were besotted with all the players, had a cultural monopoly. Enjoying kicking a ball around was nowhere near enough. Admitting to not liking football – or in my case, liking playing it but not following it – was akin to declaring oneself infected with leprosy.
