It has taken half a century for this film to make it onto a British cinema screen, basically because it is a low-budget independent drama about being black in early 1960s Alabama, and for no other perceptible reason. It’s quite amazing. Often cited as Malcolm X’s favourite film, the movie is about a railroad worker called Duff Anderson, sensationally played by Hogan’s Heroes star Ivan Dixon, who should have been catapulted by this performance into the kind of film career Morgan Freeman’s had.
